How the IMN saved my Life

Sounds pretty drastic huh? The IMN saving my life sounds crazy, but its true.

Allow for me to explain.

Coming into the IMN now for my second year, I really didn’t know what to expect. I’m currently in the first year of a church plant with a partner and we’re doing great. Going into last years IMN experience we were a couple of months away from gathering our core group of people to help us plant the church. Going into this year’s experience we were in our 5th month of being open to the public. Things have been going great, better than I expected, but we still have a long way to go.

Something mystical happened to me at this year’s IMN experience. On the way back from taking my partner to the airport (he had to return several days early) God began to speak to me very clearly about our current situation, my role, and particularly, my leadership. The day before this happened; we had an all day session of the Character Matrix. I’m very familiar with the character matrix, but God began to open my eyes to the issue of lacking courage. On my drive back from the airport, God began to reveal to me why I lacked courage. To summarize, God showed me how I was more concerned with making people like me than I was about fighting for the heart of the church and leading with courage. It was a humbling experience to say the least. I could hear God telling me that if I continued forfeiting my leadership that he would remove me from having spiritual influence. When I returned from the airport, I sat outside of William Carey University in the car, crying, thinking about how God had brought me to this place in my life. A Tennessee kid, who was living life for himself, found a relationship with God through Jesus, left a six figure per year job to pursue advancing this invisible Kingdom. I sat amazed as I thought about the events of my life that had brought me to Los Angeles, CA as a part of this movement of God. All I could do was worship God for using my life and repent for lacking the courage I needed to be the leader God desires for me to be.

If God were to remove me from having spiritual influence, if he were to take me away from serving the local church, it would devastate me. I can’t even imagine my life without that. However, that is no longer a worry I have to wrestle with. I’m leading with courage and integrity now, pursuing those things that God has laid on my heart. I’m making decisions based on what I believe is right and best for the church, not what I think will keep everyone liking me. Since returning it’s forced me into a lot of hard conversations, but I’ve moved forward couragously.

So now you see, the IMN saved my life. It focused me back to those things that are essential and challenged me throw aside the non-essentials in my pursuit to become the leader I was born to be.

Sam.

Great to hear from you, Erik! And so good to see how big an impact the IMN experience had on you. We feel the same. It was a truly significant moment for us. We’re excited by what God’s doing and going to do with and through you guys. It was awesome to get to spend time with you and sense your heart for the church.

PS I hope you’re supporting England now that the USA is out of the World Cup?!

erik

You know Sam. I was on the fence about who to pull for now that the US has fell on its face before the entire planet, but you’ve just given me a reason to have a team:)

BTW, was Beckham’s shot incredible or what?

Sam.

Excellent, excellent! And it was a great Beckham shot…inch perfect.

Thanks for sharing that. We’ve all had those moments along the way. I’m honored to be part of it…look forward to seeing what God does through you guys.

USA is out of the cup?!?!? I’ve GOT to get cable…

Sweiven, what’s up bud? How did the VOX party go?

The IMN experience was exactly what I needed. Last year was great and had it’s on significance. The IMN is definitely something Clyde and I have marked down as a permanent fixture on our calendar.

Let me know how Mosaic SacTown is going.

We had a great time! Check out the pics on my site.

Last year’s IMN was a God-send in so many ways…you and Clyde especially…and everyone else. The connections we continue to keep and build, the relationships are more valuable than anything.

Sunday is our “official” announcement to our “sponsoring” church for Mosaic Sac…lots of support an encouragement, very exciting! Next step is Wisconsin in August to go through church planter “boot-camp” and then (if all goes well) I’ll have back-end support (admin, etc.)…there’s a wave building…a storm brewing; I can juuust see the clouds on the horizon!

erik

Clyde and I were serious when we told you we wanted to sponser your church with funds to help you get started. Email me back and we’ll talk “off the air” about it.

Eric,
Great post. I found the IMN to be a breath of fresh air. I loved the brief time that I spent with the group.
Peace,
Brian

I’m not even sure what IMN is guys but I love what you had to say about God stopping you in mid stream. It’s His grace and mercy that he shows us our blind spots. I have a ton, let me tell you!

Brian - Man I really enjoyed your session you taught and have been a frequent visitor of your blog since then. I look forward to hearing about how your church plant is doing.

Cindy - Thanks for the encouragement. I definitely needed to share my experience with others. BTW, congrats on the VOX Party in SacTown.

Rachel

Hey there Ranger. Really glad God is speaking to you and guiding you into being the leader he created you to be. We’re really praying for you guys. We’d love to keep going back to the IMN stuff. We’ll see……….

It’s a song from my toddler class, but it’s running through my head as I read your post:

God is a good God yes He is
God is a good God yes He is
He picks me up, TURNS ME AROUND,
sets my feet on solid ground.
God is a good God yes He is
God is a good God yes He is.

This will stand out as a marked time for you when the maker of the Universe paused, called your name, and you responded by taking a very pronounced turn.

Blessings on the journey,

V.
